Hi Grace!

I have learned many words for saying "to hire" or  "to employ". Can you explain what is the difference between these words:

雇

聘用

招

招聘

请

雇means to hire somebody with salary, like雇保姆(bao3mu3;maid); also means to use others' things (such as vehicle, boat.)with money,雇车;雇船.

招means recruit,enlist or enrol (by media).E.g.:我们学校下学期招200人。 Our school will enrol 200 pupils next term.

那家饭馆要招两名服务员。The restaurant wants to advertise for two waiters.(Here 招 can be replaced with 招聘.)

招聘means to give public notice of vacancies to be filled or invite applications for jobs; advertise for (a secretary, teacher, etc.) . 招聘is formal than雇, indicating respect for the potential employee.Like招聘技术工人 (advertise for skilled workers);我们学院正在招聘新老师。 (Our college is recruiting new teachers.);招聘会计一名 Wanted: An Accountant .

聘用means to employ,engage or appoint to a position.E.g.:
He was employed in the capacity of director. 他因其领导才能而被聘用。

请means to engage, showing respect for the hired people.

E.g.:他给孩子请了一位家教private tutor。

      我觉得自助游(self-service travel)挺好的，请导游(tour guide)太贵了。

I have also come across with many ways to say a company. What's the difference between these? Are there any more common words for a company? Thanks!:)

Actually the most common word for a company is 公司 in Chinese. 公司is a kind of 企业. The word which is the opposite of 企业 is 事业单位(shi4ye4 dan1wei4; a department or institution that is directed by national government office, financed by the national treasury and operated without economic calculation, e.g. public school, hospital, scientific institution, etc. ).

Both 厂家and 厂商 mean factory, but 厂商also means a factory owner or producer.
