The other day Chinese Pod posted a tip that recommended not learning to write because it will take years - just learn to type characters on the computer. This is an interesting point of view and perhaps warrants some discussion. I saw this tip just as i began to feel that writing can be a powerful tool in my own arsenal of things to help me climb this formidable mountain of a language. I would like to hear others' viewpoints. Maybe this is a good tip if one wants to get quickly up towards an intermediate level in the fastest time, but higher levels ne? I think this skill/practice can have big benefits that may not be so obvious at first glance.

It's a good question, but I think that in the end it's a very personal one. I want to know how to write, but even living in Shanghai I rarely find myself writing much besides my Chinese name and my address.
