kurvykate: Many other ChinesePod users have asked for Cantonese in the past, but as far as I'm aware it's always ended up with CPod saying they're not expanding to Cantonese (at least not yet). It's not one of the languges in the huge expansion they are doing soon (those six are French, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Arabic).

Meanwhile we've set up a Forum for Cantonese. Do come and join us there if you're interested. http://cantonese.chinesepod.com

I also hope that Cantonese will be added to CPod eventually and even posted a petition thread a while ago. There was no reaction from CPod staff at all though, but that is better than a definitive no. Expats living in Hong Kong are definitely an audience for a CantonesePod, because many have a genuine need for learning at least some basic Cantonese. ( Take note, guys-in-suits at CPod, this is an audience with a lot of money :) ). For now, I mainly rely on a native tutor to pick up Cantonese. Also, I started an "A phrase a day" thread on http://cantonese.chinesepod.com where I share some of the stuff I learn.

So what's the story? I'm assuming still no move to start doing Cantonese lessons. I am doing some volunteer teaching in Guangdong soon, in a small town where they speak Mandarin with a strong Cantonese accent. It would be great to know some of their mother tongue, and as the CPod approach is so useful, it would be great to have Cantonese available through them. ^^

The story is that Praxis is very unlikely to be opening any other language pods in the foreseeable future. Chinesepod is the only one still functioning effectively, and Ken's recent departure surely 'rocked the boat'.

Personally I think people determined to learn Cantonese could try learning it by interacting with natives if they get the chance, and there's also a very useful Pimsleur course which would be a good introduction.
