Crystal,

Thank you for taking the time today to speak with my broken chinese.  It was embarassing.  I hope to get better at speaking Mandarin.

With regards to my goals, I am trying to position myself to be able to converse at a business level.  If I were to work in Beijing or Shanghai, I would like to be able to understand what is being discussed and to be able to converse with a team of chinese employees.  I would like to understand the business culture in China as well, what are the expected customs, and what not to do.

I currently work as an E-Commerce Manager for www.cdw.com and would like to improve my language skills to better position myself for the future, as well as stay in touch with my culture.  I am Chinese and it is embarassing that I do not know how to speak Mandarin.

Hi Crystal,

Is it still holiday time over at Chinesepod?  I thought we were going to practice tonight as we skipped last week Sept.30th.  In any case, I'm ok with deferring until next Wednesday at 9pm CST (Oct.14).  Can you send me week 5 of the plan so I can study ahead.

Thanks

hi, this is the email that you were supposed to receive.

Dear student,
Between October 1st and 8th, China will celebrate both the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the PRC and the annual Mid-Autumn Festival.
Your ChinesePod teacher will be on leave during this period and, therefore, unable to take classes. Your subscription will be extended accordingly, to make up for the missed class time, and our Customer Support Team are available to address any questions or issues you may have.
Thank you for your understanding. We wish you all the best for the festival period!
Regards,
ChinesePod

Hi Cyrstal,

I have a question regarding proper usage for the words, "want", "like"

During the lessons I have heard the following combinations.  This is my interpretation.  Can you let me know if this is correct?

我喜欢 - I like... used to describe what you like

我要 - I want.  this is something my kid would say, not very polite.  Is this often used in adult converstaion.  I find it quite strong

我想 - I would like - this is different from 我喜欢 in that it is describing a further action... that I would like something?

Thank you.

Hi

我要 is often used in adult converstaion, it's not so strong as you think.

想, it must be followed by a verb when it means "would like", 想+do something, for example, 我想喝一杯咖啡 wo3 xiang3 he1 yi4 bei1 ka1fei1.

and when it is followed by an noun, it means "miss" , 我想你=i miss you.

Always a pleasure to practice with you.  谢谢你

The explanation between 有没有 and 要不要 helped me a lot.

Have a happy holidays, and 我们聊天 on Dec.30th

Based on today's vocabulary... can I say

我们再聊天

as in, "We'll chat again next time"

I forgot, my other hobby...

我爱好是自行车赛跑.  I did this for many years, stopped, and just started again last summer.

hi, you can say "我们下次再聊"

and we just say 自行车比赛 instead of 自行车赛跑.

Wish you all the best for the end of this year.
