为什么学习中文？Why do I study Chinese?

Well, as my handle indicates, 我去上海, (I'm moving to Shanghai)。I hated learning languages when I was smaller - I had to study French in public school in Canada (加拿大）and was convinced that auto-translation would make studying language an unnecessary waste of time; I was wrong of course.  

Fast forward, 我老婆是中国人 (my wife is Chinese) so 在大学我学习一下 (I studied a bit in University) soon after we met - taking a class, getting a tutor for a while, etc.  I wanted to be able to speak to her family and Chinese friends (or at least understand what they were saying).

Now that we are moving to China, 我要在中国工作 (I want to work in China).  I might get by with just English but it would be more difficult so I'm going to spend several months just learning the language - as a 'trailing spouse' with no kids I should be able to devote some serious concentration and given the immersion of living in Shanghai I should, with some effort, hopefully make good progress.

How many of my fellow Cpodders here are in Shanghai?

Any idea why we need to put in "ke3 ai4" instead of "ke3ai4"?  I'm not doing the greatest on the pinyin exercises.
