My favorite vegetable is gai lan (often known as Chinese broccoli in the states), and I'd like to know how to pronounce that correctly. Various veggies in black bean sauce is another favorite. Perhaps we can have a Newbie/Elementary lesson on sauces and condiments?

I'm going to China next year, and while I plan on losing all the weight I can before going I expect that I will still be considerably larger than most women there. The "too fat" dialogue is simply not enough (and rather off-putting), and this lesson is intermediate. :(

My favorite filling is red bean for snacking, or BBQ for a meal, but there are custard buns and pineapple buns, and and and and... :) It would be really nice to have a lesson on the different kinds and how to say them!

February 24, 2008, 07:56 AMThis is the first time I'd heard that the lessons above elementary aren't given to us in the PDFs as pinyin. Oh my. Panic sets in... (luckily, I'm still a long way from needing those PDFS)... "It wasn't hard, just extremely laborious. Don't anyone even dare gripe about the format, pinyin it yourself! ;p" Glad to see the smiley at the end of that. :) However, unfortunately making it into pinyin to those who can't read the characters is, well, impossible. (Unless there's a free pinyin conversion program online someone can direct us to.) After all, the focus of the podcast is on spoken Mandarin. Giving pinyan seems a good compromise, considering the podcast's established and oft-stated focus. (And I was directed to this lesson for a completely different purpose, but yes, had to read through the entire discussion...) ;)

February 22, 2008, 03:53 AMMLowe talked about brewing up above - thank you! :) While I can't drink alcohol, my husband brews beer, wine, cider, you name it. Our garage is a brewery. *chuckle* I was quite pleased to be able to come home and tell him all my new beer words today! Since microbrewery is so big in the US, could we have a podcast about it? That way some of the terms others have asked about (Ale, Lager, Porter, Stout, Bock, Barley Wine - and others like wines and cider) could be covered. It would be much appreciated!
