well thankfully things have changed. Years ago Designation happened in the parking lot after the bar closed. He with the fewest dwi's was "designated".

well I think you are correct that the actual translation is something like "substitute driver" but "designated driver" has been so over-used in drunk driving ad campaigns the US that is has become a set phrase of sorts. Another Americanism if you will. It didnt strike me as odd at all until you mentioned it.

Well it was kind of obvious to me that it was supposed to be a play on words referring to the Australian "walk about" and I thought it was supposed to be obvious, not an accident. The world does know about your "walk about" thing so no need for surprise.
