November 01, 2014, 03:56 PMMy experience is that if you practice writing a character (like writing it 50 times on page for example), then you'll be able to recognize the character for a long time without reviewing it, but you will quickly forget how to write it. Whereas being able to write it permanently, you'll have to both read it and write it very frequently. I will presumably for instance never forget to write or recognize basic characters like 我，你，中文 etc. Knowing the radicals makes it a lot easier by the way.

July 02, 2014, 04:22 PMXuè is the official pronunciation (according to my dictionary http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E8%A1%80), but here on chinesepod xiě is mostly used. It's probrably very common in Shanghai.
