Well done Jenny and John! I thought this was a lovely lesson. After completing my studies, I chuckled as I read about the Boxing Day shopping madness in the shops across the UK in The Telegraph and Guardian. What a very timely lesson! Kudos and most importantly, Happy Holidays! ;)

@Mark: Agreed. Words change over the course of history based upon a group's needs at the time. One only has to look at teenage slang for the twisted meanings of words used by contemporary or historic elders.

It would seem that 'black sheep' was a very negative concept that is currently being 'softened' at the moment. (I can only speak of the States. Perhaps this is not the case in the United Kingdom, Canada, etc.)

I agreed with Greg's viewpoints on this matter.

In the expansion page is the following sentence:

中国

The definition for guo4 is listed as "guo" in English. I'm afraid I don't know what this means. Is this a measure word or particle or something?

I am a one-month-old newbie, so I really appreciated all of the vocabulary nuggets in this lesson. I just learned 请 as 'please' two weeks ago, so it was really interesting to learn that it also means 'to treat.' 谢谢 for the well done lesson!
