September 07, 2008, 03:57 AMWe just ate today at a local authentic Szechuan restaurant near our place here in the Bay Area. I totally used a lot of the vocab that I learned from this lesson and others as well (including the one about Chinese takeout).
我们点三个川菜：宫保鸡丁，回锅牛肉，和家常豆腐。
They were absolutely fantastic!
I conversed with the wait staff entirely in Chinese from start to finish and my wife was pretty impressed :)
As many others no doubt have already told you guys: You guys rock when it comes to teaching people Chinese. :)

I am a Filpino-Chinese myself. Growing up in the Philippines, I attended one of the several Chinese schools in Manila. Most Chinese people who speak Mandarin over there use an accent that is closest to the Taiwanese one shown here in this Podcast. I personally think it was inappropriate for your friend to try to correct you, because as was mentioned in this podcast, all of these are correct in their own right. No person should claim that their accent is the best (although of course Beijing people always will, I think).
If you are not a native Chinese speaker yet comfortable enough to type in Chinese, I think that is already very good. He should encourage you by praising your Chinese rather than criticizing your accent.

Regardless of what people say here, I think people will find this lesson useful just because of the pervasiveness of MSFT software - pirated or not.
Also want you Chinesepod guys to know that there are Microsoft employees like me in the US who listen to you regularly. I referred some of them personally to Chinesepod.
Needless to say, in a business such as MSFT's, we work a lot with engineers based in China (I myself have worked with folks from the Beijing office). Some of us even get sent to China, so knowing Chinese definitely is a plus.

Strictly speaking I think you should not alter the pronunciation, because it totally affects the meaning, but sometimes, people can figure out what you are saying (even though you did not get the tones right) just through the context.
