Posted on: Oil in the Middle East
October 28, 2013, 02:37 PMYou bring up some good points, but I think it's good to not be too aggressive about these issues. I could point out that you refering to Afghanistan as being in the Middle East is ignorant, because it's rarely considered as part of that region, nor has it ever been.
Anyway, no reason to harp on that, because you do bring up some good issues. With that said, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE control more than half of the world's remaining conventional oil. The stereotype holds with them.

September 16, 2013, 07:41 AMInteresting - a lot of words that make their way back and forth between Mandarin and other languages go through Cantonese, as you mentioned. 的士 (diksi?) is another one that I can think of that sounds similar to taxi, but doesn't make much sense in Mandarin, either by meaning or by the sound. Incidentally, it has the same character as 瑞士.

December 12, 2012, 03:47 PMI agree with you on point number 2, but if you had talked with anyone beforehand about number 1, you would have received the answers with a more than passing rate. I'm not saying people knew exactly who would be in place, but they knew the prominent ones.

October 28, 2013, 02:39 PMxiaomai5's point here should also be heeded. If we really wanted a lesson on oil-producing countries, it would be better to focus on Russia, the US, and China, in addition to the ones I mentioned before. Those three countries rarely get much focus though, because they're not petro-states.
