Wow, who woulda thunk! There are so many uses for the very simple word: 白! For a word that means wasted, it sure has a lot of uses ;).
Thanks so much for the examples.

February 16, 2009, 03:15 AMEnjoyed this lesson and definitely would like to see how Wang takes it to court. I guess he has to find a lawyer first or just the labor department? How does it work?
And how's this for trivia? I never realized that so many were killed.
"Going postal" originated in the USA in 1990s following everal incidents from 1986 onward, in which individuals working for the United States Postal Service workers shot and killed fellow workers and members of the public. The first event of this kind was in August 1986, when fourteen postal workers were killed and six wounded by gunshot in an Oklahoma post office, by Patrick Sherrill, himself a postal worker, who later shot himself. Between that date and 1997 there were more than 40 deaths in 20 such incidents.

Why is someone bringing over a FAN (of all things) to China? :)
Question:
This was a great lesson and I especially enjoyed the new uses of 白. I've only ever known it as a colour. Could we get some examples of situations where you would actually use- 白看了 & 白听了? Would I say that, for example, after watching a bad movie or listening to an awful song?
Thanks!

I think its wrong for historians to determine whether someone (in this case Marco Polo) has or has not been to a place based on what they did NOT say. For example, I went to Venice and never mentioned noodles, the canals or glass blowing to my friends. I did, however, talk extensively about the handmade notebooks and the art work in the galleries I visited. Does that mean I must have never been to Venice?
Also- foot binding did not happen nationwide. I don't have a single relative that had bound feet.

February 17, 2009, 12:20 PMI have a totally different take on the meaning of the poem Pete. I actually think its about the futility of this life. The juxtaposition between pig and man is not about one being weak/stronger than the other- but about both being exactly the same.
Pig eats man, man eats pig,
Pig stinks, man is fragrant,
Pig dies is buried, man dies is buried,
When they stop eating each other the lotus will bloom out of boiling water.
As in ... neither one will ever happen. And notice the use of the Lotus- which can rise out of all sorts of muck as you pointed out- but to rise out of boiling water, even the Lotus cannot do that.
And this completes the Buddhist thought that you have to transcend the earth because the earth and its cycle of life will not change.
