Posted on: Saying Goodbye at the Airport
March 01, 2010, 10:43 AMI like how John is not afriad to discuss grammar, even at the elementary level. As long was we're talking about tricky 了:
In the expansion sentences, what's the difference (if any) between
回去以后,我给他打个电话
and
回去以后,我给他打了个电话

February 22, 2010, 02:41 AMWhen I first heard this dialogue, I thought the woman said 我老伴 instead of 我老爸. I have heard northerner's use 老伴儿 (with the 儿) but is this also used in Shanghai? If so, 有没有儿化音?

February 15, 2010, 03:26 PMSo if 我来了 is completely context-dependent and can mean completely different things: “I'm coming", "I've almost come" or "I came", what's the point of saying it?

January 22, 2010, 11:07 AMSo 有 is one of the verbs (like the "psych" verbs John mentioned a few lessons ago e.g. 很想去) that can be modified by 很. What are some others?

January 11, 2010, 02:10 AMSo does 同居 necessarily imply romantic cohabitation? Can a homestay be 同居? How do you say homestay (when a student stays with a foreign family for language immersion purposes) anyway?

December 30, 2009, 01:18 PM这是学中文的网站吧。你们还是用一个popup词典(比如http://popupchinese.com/chinese/download),不用打拼音。不仅免费而且很有用!

December 30, 2009, 02:41 AMVery good explanation on 记住 and 记, but what about 记 and 记得? Are they always interchangeable? Could the last line be 因为可以直接叫他名字,不用记得奇怪的称呼。? I feel like 得 should introduce a complement, but here it seems like it's part of the verb.

December 29, 2009, 09:29 AMI am baffled by the grammar in this Expansion sentance:
他不是有女朋友了吗?
(Is she not your girlfriend?)
It seems to me to be "Doesn't he have a girlfriend". Is this translation just wrong?
