May 16, 2008, 07:32 AMJust this afternoon I had a 蓝莓刨冰 lan2mei2 bao4bing1, the cold drink with crushed ice and a kind of fruit jam mentioned in one of above comments. They are great for the scorching hot summers here. 蓝莓 is the blueberry, and 草莓 cao3mei2 (strawberry) is also quite good. As for hot milk tea, I like Hami melon (哈密瓜 ha1mi4 gua1), strawberry, and sometimes banana (香蕉 xiang1jiao1). I had a peanut butter (花生 hua1sheng1) one the other day which was much better than it sounds.

April 22, 2008, 05:37 AMChristine, yes, I didn't get into accents of other English speaking countries.... my friends and I recently watched a movie that takes place in Ireland and we had to leave on the subtitles to understand their English. And in some cases, say a really thick Southern accent, it might be hard for me to understand another American.

April 22, 2008, 03:16 AMIt's interesting when Chinese people ask me about dialects and accents in America. Most of them are surprised when I tell them it's very different from China and I can understand any other American. I've also been asked many times which area has the "standard" way of speaking. Actually I was just talking about this with my girlfriend last night--she is from Washington state and I am from New York State but we speak pretty much exactly the same way. Why do only certain parts of America, i.e. NYC, Boston, the South, Texas have distinctive accents? I would be interested if anyone knows.

April 20, 2008, 03:45 AMI've wanted to know "I have a runny nose" for the longest time, but can never remember to look it up or ask someone. The last time I went to the doctor in China I was given what looked to me like liquefied tree bark and animal droppings. Taking it was nearly as painful as being ill in the first place. 我比较喜欢西药。

April 15, 2008, 02:28 AMThe local favorite around here is probably the 牛肉面 niu2rou4 mian4 (Beef Noodles) from Lanzhou, typically about 2.5 yuan/bowl. But I'm partial to the 炒面片 chao3mian4pian4 ("chow mien"; fried noodles) or 炒拉条 chao3 la1tiao2. Muslim restaurants tend to do noodles well.

I didn't sleep at all and it ended my summer travels by making me incredibly ill. Trains in China: wonderful. Buying train tickets during peak times: a nightmare.

May 27, 2008, 11:19 AM大盘鸡 is high in the running for my favorite Chinese dish, or perhaps I should say dish that is available in China. I am confident that if I brought it to an American college town, took out the bones, had a non-spicy version and made the chicken head and claws optional, it would be a hit. For anyone who travels to Xinjiang, I would definitely try the 抓饭 zhua1fan4, a tasty dish of yellow rice and lamb.
