indeed, 点儿 and other similar -儿 "suffixed" words were (and are) stumbling blocks for me. I did a brief search and came up with nihil. So, in accordance with wjeff, pronunciation drills/lessons that deal with such monsters and how they work would be enjoyable. Also, i've possibly found that 汤 and 烫 are easy characters to remember provided you know 汤; and then what john was saying about the invaders and the castle drives home the character too: the (hot) soup (汤) is on the fire (火) (getting hotter), therefore scalding (烫), and it's ready to fall down and burn the peasants... umm invaders (4th tone).
