If anyone is looking for a less-invasive QQ client (for windows), there is Tencent Messenger 2008 (http://im.qq.com/intl/en/tm/2008/) with both the download page and client itself in english-language. It offers less 'extra' functionality than the QQ client (no virtual pet, far fewer buttons, and no adware/spyware), but you can still populate a friends list and do most of the chat-centered stuff (for me, everything I wanted QQ for in the first place).
Even if you'd rather the regular client, the TM2008 page has an english-language link to create a QQ account that can be used regardless of which client you use (look for the link in the upper right-hand part of the page).
