Posted on: Pinyin The Final R Sound
January 25, 2010, 02:53 PMHi Orangina - just recently joined this website and enjoying it very much. I lived in Taiwan and many Taiwanese pronounced 熱 and 日with an intial "z" sound, with the tongue touching the teeth, whereas northern Chinese seem to make a similar sound but with the tongue rolled back and perhaps the teeth apart. It may help to try starting off with an initial "z" then moving the tongue and teeth to get to the "proper" 北進 or 標準 accent。 By the way I find pinyin better than bo-po-mo-fo, but maybe because I was taught that first.
