September 24, 2010, 04:03 PMOr perhaps there is some Taoist reason behind calling an emergency exit '非常门': "门可门非常门" (cf. the first line of the 道德经)

April 25, 2010, 03:14 PM”不好饲侏儒们“- don't feed the trolls! 这些扇风贴是不必要回答的。学习语言应该是令人开眼界的活动;要体会中国具有的经验丰富,得愿意接受居民语言的丰富以及特色。‘中文‘包括方言- 而且,当普通话寻常借方言的说法和对表达新现象的创造力,这能使我们日常用的普通话变成更活泼=很黄很暴力

April 20, 2010, 01:46 AMSo stoked for this series!
I find it is almost harder to get on (travelling) in places where people think their dialect is more similar to Mandarin than in places where it is patently different; for example Sichuanese is familiar, but the tones are all the opposite way round- 3rd tone sounds like 4th tone, 4th tone more like 3rd tone, and the, 1st tone is more like 2nd tone, and 2nd tone, well, is just a bit odd. When you have only just mastered the standard tones it is quite difficult to loosen up your mental rules to accomodate Sichuanese people- one guy asked me how many times I had been to Sichuan (几次), I thought he was talking about 鸡子,or something rude...
I know it is a bit more complicated than that and there are lots of exceptions and idiomatic phrases (e.g. hao duo qian means 多少钱, not 好多钱)- but maybe one lesson in how to bluff your way through Sichuan would be useful? I tried the tone swapping thing once and it kind of worked...

“ (‘Poetry is cosmopolitan, and the more interesting the more it shows it's nationality')

Posted on: The Tea Scam
May 31, 2012, 05:08 PMWas heading into the Shanghai urban planning museum one time when I ran into a group of girls and guys (seemed like a family) who had apparently just come out. They claimed to be from Haerbin, and wanted me to come along to a tea exhibition that they were in town specially to go and see and which was closing soon- intriguing! I didn't twig that it was a scam, but luckily was just really keen on seeing the Shanghai urban planning museum, so I left them and I only realised a couple of weeks later when I noticed the same group plying their trade in the very same spot. In retrospect there were two massive burly guys standing behind the chatty girl, so I'm quite glad I didn't go...
