If you use only 梦，it would just means that you had a dream (from sleeping).
For example, 我昨天（睡觉）作了一个梦。
If you add a thinking to the dream = 梦想，it now means your aspiration.
For example, 我小时候的梦想是当超人！ (My childhood dream is to be a superman!)
And if you add something to 梦想家，for example, a house, it becomes your dream home!
So, either you had a dream (from sleeping) or you had a dream (since young) to be someone(or thing).
