October 08, 2007, 02:45 PMGreat lesson but I'm finding it strangely difficult to get my head round the positioning (or absence of) the possessive 的 ("de"). This lesson has generous handfuls of them (last line for example?) and I do find it difficult to spot the rule... why for instance doesn't the 菜 (food) from 意大利 (Italy) need an associated 的 to make it "Italian food"? Would this make a Qing Wen perhaps? (please!)

July 19, 2007, 11:15 AMJenny, in this lesson you say the tones on "nali" (where) are third and neutral, but it sounds like third and third (and is described in other lessons as third and third). Is there a rule here for the tone change..? Thanks!

In the comments of the newbie lesson, "Too Polite", there are a few comments about "and" in Chinese. I was wondering the same thing - and I'm still not clear if there is an exact equivalent of the English usage, I suspect not - but what's there is helpful.

What is the "zhong1 de" doing? Why is it not simply:
他比我想象好
Ta1 bi3 wo3 xiang3xiang4 hao3
