Posted on: Visiting the Aquarium
May 10, 2012, 01:05 PMreally? if so, I think this should have been briefly mentioned in the podcast. It only would have taken about 15-20 seconds to make it clear. I've actually used to word 水族馆 while pointing at small aquariums in restaurants and got the feeling that it wasn't the appropriate word

May 10, 2012, 06:10 AMokay, and just one more question.
Is 水族馆 also the word used to say a small aquarium in someone's bedroom? So, if I have a little aquarium in my bedroom with 3/4 fish in it, is that also called a 水族馆 ?

May 01, 2012, 06:05 AMI partly agree with what Mark said, except I think that sometimes it's even improper to add the 儿 . Sometimes Beijing locals say that the 儿 is necessary for some words , but I think it's mostly just dialectical and perhaps even improper at times. Also, it's not just Beijing locals that do this; lots of other northern Chinese people do it as well.
Along with this, Beijingers also do another thing that's not right: the "v" sound. For words like 玩, which they are guaranteed to say 玩儿,they pronounce it "vár" instead of "wár" . There isn't even a "v" sound in standard Mandarin. So they're basically speaking their local dialect that's mutually intelligible with Mandarin speakers. There's a common misconception that Beijing dialect is Mandarin, but this isn't true. Beijing has it's own dialect which is different than standard Mandarin

April 29, 2012, 12:58 PMspeaking of rating lessons, I think it would be a good idea for the Chinesepod hosts/teachers to encourage listeners to rate lessons. I don't recall any of the hosts ever mentioning rating the lessons

April 28, 2012, 02:58 PMthis Qingwen was cool...but it was sort of simple though. I think the English definitions of 需要,要, and 不用 are pretty straightforward.
I still enjoyed listening to ya'll~~
