It wasn't anything exciting really. I actually ended up learning how to make a number of Chinese dishes from my husbands mom, since I didn't know how to make any of the traditional dishes from Shanghai. Normally the bride does this herself, but I am blessed with a very nice mother-in-law.

April 14, 2009, 02:35 PMMmm... I had to do something like this too. Interesting lesson.
@Pete, many women actually really did see having bound feet as a sign of beauty and status which is why it was so hard to wipe out. Even though it was a horrible thing to have happen to them (or to have to do to your own child,) many actually fought hard to keep the tradition alive.

April 14, 2009, 04:27 AMThis was very entertaining and useful! You guys did a good job!
@Pete. Sometimes I think deciphering the English on the menu is harder than just getting out the pocket dictonary and trying to read the Chinese!

April 10, 2009, 03:31 PMI actually prefer the squat toilets because 1) they are more "clean", because you dont have to sit on them. I actually hate when the public toilet is a western style one because I would NEVER sit on a public toilet in China!... 2) Its actually better for your body, and you get exercise. 3) You don't need to touch anything...

Cute lesson :D
I've been using chopsticks since I was a little kid, 3 or 4 I think? In fact I refused to use a fork for a few years after accidentally jabbing myself in the face... nasty memory...
I am always surprised when Chinese people compliment me on my kuaizi use, I always thought it was a pretty normal thing in the U.S. although some people never seem to get the hang of it...

March 22, 2009, 10:28 AM@xemrac,
Thanks for that article, it was really interesting!
I totally agree about supporting smaller-scale anything and slow food, its always the better choice! I really do hope people are starting to take notice, anytime you mess with the natural rhythm of things something goes wrong.
@rjberki
My mom has been a vegetarian since she was a little kid, she refused to eat meat because she got sick every time she ate any. When my parents got married my dad decided that he wasn't going to argue (since it meant he would have to buy and cook the meat, haha)

March 20, 2009, 03:06 PMJust my 2 cents.
Actually as a "western liberal" I have to say that I really like how in China you can actually see what you eat before you eat it (this is in the case of meat) because you really get to see the live animal (and pick which one you want!) There is no pretending and forgetting, no plastic wrap, that piece of meat in your hand was once a living creature.
Whereas back in the U.S. its far to easy to to forget that what is on your plate was treated just as badly as what you buy in China, its just not shoved in your face every time you choose to buy some meat. Isn't it nice that us in the west have been able to avoid this little fact of life (or death.)
And I really don't see how eating dog meat is any different than eating pork or chicken or beef. I don't have a problem with eating meat but I do think the amount of resources wasted on producing it and the the ridiculous ways in which huge quantities are produced at the expense of the animals and over use of antibiotics just to keep them alive is ridiculous.
(BTW I have never eaten any meat in my life.)

Jenny, 嘻唰唰/xi3 shua1 shua1, I love that song! I found it by accident on the net one day a few years ago and I never knew what the name of the band was! n_n
rjberki, I also refused to drink milk when I was a kid (I still don't unless you count ice cream or smoothies) my mom told me I said "its tastes like bones... I wont drink it" I love the Chinese yogurt though, you really do "drink" it. It has a much higher liquid content than what we consider to be "yogurt" in the U.S.

Its probably because so much of Chinese culture centers around food. I could go into more depth but I'm sure someone from Cpod will explain more.
