July 01, 2010, 02:40 AMHonestly, I like that along with more "standard" lesson topics (business, pleasantries, traditional Chinese culture and arts) there are the "spice it up" lessons. If I were going for just the most standard sort of conversations, I could find these elsewhere. Along with the standard stuff, I'm looking for cultural insights on a number of issues, some vocabulary and structures not taught in bland textbooks, and some interesting topics that I can discuss. I went to school and taught English in China, and I would have liked to have more breadth in vocabulary to discuss more topics with people.
The neat thing about Chinese is that it also utilizes compound words, so even if a word may not be totally useful all alone, you can break it up and make new words for different contexts. The more of these compound words I see, the more I find myself able to decipher future compound words. In this light, very few lessons are useless. You don't need to discuss that specific topic in order to utilize the vocabulary learned!

请问，汉语怎么说 "camping” 和 "hiking"? 我只学过 ”爬山“，不知道hiking算不算爬山。
