Posted on: Where are you from?
April 28, 2010, 04:30 AM你好!
I have a question about the use of 是(shi) as a one word response to a question.
In the podcast Ken says something like 'you are indeed a Zhongguoren' and she replies with 是. Is this like saying 'yes, I am'? Why didn't she say 对(dui). Similarly, it seems like 你是中国人吗(ni shi Zhongguoren ma) could also be answered with a simple 是.
Also, at the very beginning of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Li Mu Bai responds to Shui Lien with 是 after she says 慕白兄,好久不见. My translation of her statement is 'mu bai elder brother, long time no see.' How does 是 work as a response to this?
