I came to China 3 years ago (work) and I started to learn Chinese with FESCO system based on Pinyin. Well,.. at the beginning it's quite fun as easily you can come up with some every-day expressions BUT very quickly pinyin become real show-stoppers as the progress is very limited or inexistent. You loose the "childish" (but extremely useful) game "look-to-the-stores-and-tell-me-what-is-is written". I really regret that I haven't started with 汉字 directly (combined with Pinyin for the pronunciation). I'm quite sure that I would have huge improvement even though the starting should have been quite tough. Anyway, I try now :) never late ;)
