Sometimes old words used differently help understand more. I was taken back by 南京西路 . So for all types of locations with a locator do we put the North, South.... afterwards for instance East Lobby, South Entrance, North Building......

As it is: I do have trouble with tones just as our leader Ken but we do overcome this with our wit and blarney. Though I am three generations removed from the motherland like all Irishmen we never forget our roots. Great gift Ken to those lucky enough to live in Ireland!

Perhaps studying Grammar in English partly depends on ones age and school. I went to Catholic Grade School and besides spending a few hours a week being beaten for sloppy penmanship we also spent hours a week diagraming sentences. I wonder how many native English speakers ever did this?

That was sort of what I was trying to suggest as a way to learn characters in depth. Perhaps in the future you might even make a show of four or five a week like this. In my way of learning it really helps to understand characters in this way.
Today ( I live in Japan) but was with a Mainland Chinese Guy who is now living in the US and we talked quite a bit about 上 and 下 in terms of time. And at the same time about the culture of language. so binding or weaving takes on so much more meaning once you understand the character. My friend also admitted he likes traditional characters for this reason.
Soon I will be back in the US- now in Japan. (I hope for only a short time). The good part of being in the US is I will be able to enjoy studying Chinese with more time. So expect more posts after the 4th of July.

I know in Hong Kong they put a time limit on the subway tickets because of the two guy delivery system. I saw it in action many times in HK both packages flipped over the turnstyle in and out. I thought it was very classic Chinese creative way to save money.

I know you are an incredibly well rounded person but I will still be amazed if you have heard about " Who's on first" from Abbott and Costello. Maybe John can explain. Most of the key part of the dialogue could easily be coverted to Chinese. It would be an amusing way to learn, who,what and I don't know..

不好意思 Although I think today's show contains some nice/useful vocabulary, I am now positive the "C" doesn't stand for Comedy. To re-phrase Jenny's comment, I think the only one who might find this funny is a mom hearing their little precious one tell it.

May 15, 2009, 09:52 AMAh Jenny and Ken It aches to hear a lesson about Taiwan. I miss it so much even though I do go there occasionally on business. My two years there were very good times. I also prefer the Taiwan accent to the Beijing accent even though I consider myself a manly man and the Taiwan soft sound seems more feminine than the hard Beijinger "r". I love Beef Noodle Soup but if we had it at lunch I learned from experience to take my dress shirt off and just sit on the stool at the street stall in my t-shirt. That stuff stains and with the way I slurp it was impossible not to have more on me than in my belly. Today was also interesting for me now living in Japan as I have an engineer here who is from Beijing. I asked HIM to contact a customer (a female engineer) in Taiwan by e-mail. I was copied and it was a very interesting e-mail on many many levels. As the contact is increasing perhaps you might think about this for a lesson or two. And one last cultural point . It is so easy for a Taiwan person to go to China but the reverse is still extremely difficult . I understand some of the issues but it is something the two countries/places seem to be resolving.
