Posted on: It's a Boy! And a Girl!
August 13, 2014 at 2:34 AM

I did an image search for 龙凤胎 and noticed that quite a few photos of infants, though not all, have the girl diapered while the boy is naked with, uh, assets proudly on display. Am I on the right track thinking this has something to do with 重男轻女 (zhòngnánqīngnǚ), or is something else going on?

Thanks Jenny for sharing your own experiences with this. We're in the same boat with a 3 year old, choosing vaccines, food, etc. Most of our Chinese friends are very pragmatic and worry about the same things we do, but there are occasional awkward moments of "Why is the Chinese made [X] not good enough for you?" Would love to see Chinese industry and regulators push product safety and quality control up to international standards. Would be a more powerful statement of China's growth and maturation than any of the shiny skyscrapers and other prestige projects!

+1 The latest Elementary is also missing exercises. Just a glitch, or is this a deliberate change?

I was frequently called "ornery" as a child, usually by grandparents. Now my Chinese in-laws enjoy pointing out when my daughter is acting rather 凶, so I suppose I've gotten my comeuppance.

Totally wrecked my morning. I notice my wife always counts/calculates in Chinese and then translates. I wonder if the language we associate with computation gets wired into the brain differently, enough so that trying to do it in a second language isn't something that comes easily.

Yes, I'm pretty sure my wife says hǎo bù hǎo to our daughter at least 30 times a day.
