June 09, 2008, 09:56 AMWitch-hunting a la Chinese pod? Looks like it. For 2 and a half years I have lived in China working as an English and German teacher. During that period and after I haven't come across any such Chinese able to speak impeccable English. And believe me, I have met thousands. It's not an accusation. It is a fact I have noticed.

June 09, 2008, 09:18 AMThe fact that you and Ms. Zhu are native speakers of a language doesn't necessarily qualify you as a specialists in the field of Chinese linguistics, if you catch my drift. You are a heritage speaker of Chinese? So am I supposed to fall on my knees and say: "Wow". I have yet to meet a Chinese person who speaks impeccable English. As a heritage speaker, I am sure you speak perfect Chinese, but then there are no perfect bilinguals. So the balance must needs be tilted. Catch mz drift? In my (humble) opinion, when you list a word and its possible meanings be sure to talk about shades of meaning, context and so on. Then it's ok to talk about other uses.

June 09, 2008, 08:45 AMI don't argue with the fact that Ms. Zhu is a native speaker of Chinese, but I doubt her abilities to speak perfect English. For starters, as Mr Carol has pointed out, in English there is a difference between "mountain climbing" and "hiking". Truth is, there are different words for that in Chinese as well. According to 金山词霸 (the 2002 electronic edition), hiking is perfectly translatable as 徒步旅行 túbùlǚxíng. The same (徒步旅行)is the translation for hiking given in "A Concise Practical English/Chinese Dictionary" published by the prestigious Sinolingua in 1999. The second volume of "The English-Chinese Word Ocean" published in 1990 by the Guofang Chubanshe, gives 徒步旅行 as being the synonym for "hiking". No mention is made of 爬山 in reference to "hiking". Such erroneous examples are countless in your shows. I understand that the kind of small talk you do is perceived by you as the perfect defintion of an entertaining Chinese lesson, but, I beg of you, in the name of professionalism and linguistic accuracy, avoid chitchatting about the definition of words and resort to reliable professional sources, i.e. dictionaries, linguists.

Can the Chinese be suspected for being condescending towards nationals coming from non-Western countries, or, shall we say third-world countries?
