February 19, 2008, 07:05 AMI don't mean to be rude. Perhaps it is that I learned my Chinese in Taiwan. Like Brotherick, when I look at simplified characters I have to translate twice. First into traditional, then into English. It truly does give me a headache. I suppose if I learned simplified first, I would feel differently.

Posted on: Chinese Medicine: Acupuncture, Cupping and Scraping
June 26, 2008, 03:47 PMAs a practitioner of Chinese medicine I can tell you that cupping is not at all painful, and if it is, then your practitioner is being too heavy handed. Cupping is excellent method to improve blood circulation through areas that are locked down by tension and stress. Most people find it to be both comfortable and effective.
Acupuncture, I could talk about all day. Again, the skill of the practitioner is the key thing there. Acupuncture rarely should be painful. Those people with excess constitutions or health issues due to excess sometimes need strong treat to resolve their problem. But, for those people that are weaker, or depleted, strong treatment will only make their problem worse and they will feel exhausted.
When practicing herbal medicine we say 對證下藥. For acupuncture you could say 對證動手. It is vitally important that the practitioner understands the relative mix of excess and deficiency in a patient before they insert a single needle!
