December 06, 2007, 10:36 PMDumb question time. Any obvious ways to spot the difference between shi er ling ba being "1208" and as it was in the lesson as "It's 208"? I know the shi tone changes but I never can pick the difference.

June 04, 2007, 02:02 AMKen I shall never tire of your explanations about the make up of Chinese words. zhi3jin1 is one I regularly have to use but rarely pronounce correctly. Chinesepod listeners outside of China may not realise that serviettes/napkins are not standard issue at most restaurants, here in southern China. some restaurants leave small tissue packs on the table and at others you have to ask for these tissue packs hence the need for the word zhi3jin1 on a regular basis.

There is a daily service for Beijing and alternate day service for the the following city pairs, Shanghai/GuangZhou, ChengDu/ChongQing and Xining/Lanzhou. Hard sleepers are a bit cramped, Views spectacular. The permit for Tibet cost RMB 400 and took 4 days

November 04, 2008, 10:36 PMIn my part of china (Shenzhen) my building is always called "dong" rather than "lou" eg "shiwu dong" rather than "shiwu hao lou". Any set rules on the use of "dong" and "lou" or his this just a regional thing?
