July 01, 2010, 05:18 AMThis should also be useful if you travel to Suzhou and other parts of Jiangsu province where the dialect is also Wu and quite similar to shanghainese

July 01, 2010, 05:14 AMI have recently been in shanghai and bought a shanghainese book which is very helpful. It is called:
"Shanghai Dialect for Foreigners"
It has a CD which helps in the same way the podcasts do to walk you through the language by actual pronunication and commonly used phrases.
I also bought a whole bunch of other items for learning shanghainese (some for native mandarin speakers). I will give a review of these later.

June 10, 2010, 04:14 AMThis is awesome guys!
I've always wanted chinesepod to add lessons for other dialects such as 閩南話, 廣東話,還有上海話。

February 15, 2009, 01:42 AMThis ia a great lesson
I have been saying for years there is a drastic difference between the ZH sound found on words like 中國 and 這張照片
I learned standard Mandarin in school as most of us did. However, southerners and especially Taiwanese tend to turn this sound into a soft z sound removing the "J" sound altoghether
Zhongwen becomes "zongwen"
This is also a problem with the numbers 4 and 10 just like the lesson preview said.
In taiwan, the only way I can tell the difference between four and ten is by the tone they use. They are definitely not distinguishing between S and SH sounds.
Interesting Lesson guys.
Maybe we can have one on regional dialects sometime such as on 上海話, 關東華,還是台語
謝謝你們!!
