I'm in Taipei teaching English, I'm employed by a school, they wanted some one with a degree, or a TEFL TESOL cerficate. The school sorts out everything, like the ARC card (Ailen residency card it means you can work in Taiwan), health insurance card. A school or schools to work at. ARC also means you can leave the country and return and not have to get a VISA.
I got some training, and legal info, then I was send to school, and i was able to watch classes being taught.
I suppose it depends on where you live, and what you want to eat/drink/ buy. But definatly in Taipei, I'm sure you could get away with limited Chinese, pointing and 這個 seems to work well. Some people speak English, some resturants have English on their menus.
I'm going to asume that big cities in China would be the same.

In Taiwan ground floor is 1st floor, which kinda confused me for a week or two. In England it's ground floor, 1st, 2nd etc.
Although in the Breeze Center near ZhongXiao Fu Xing (I think that's right) in Taipei they have a ground floor, below 1st floor (which is street level) I think you can exit the building on ground floor. Very crazy.

September 02, 2008, 02:39 AMI've noticed a few changes. The PFD addresses are way longer than before. there are some crazy numbers in them, but the putting trad before the last .pdf still works.
Is Chinese Pod thinking about putting a direct link to the trad pdf's from the discussion page??
And the 甚is now什 I don't know when it was changed.
It seems that Chinese Pod was very busy during their downtime. I think it would have be nice for CP to say 'we will be down for x hours' rather than having a little note saying we'll be back soon.

December 02, 2008, 03:49 AMFor about 2 weeks I heard this in Wellcome, I was like What? then I realised what the phrase was about, and three months later I can say it.
I don't think the dialogue is too fast, it's the normal speed I hear when I go shopping. But for a newbie it is possibly to fast, but then you have the situation of Chinesepod making unrealisticly slow dialogue, that isn't done in China/Taiwan.
