I hope there are some poddies that speak Iranian. I don't know how likely that is but if there is someone, I am sure they will help you out. I remember the other day someone was speaking French and many people chipped in and gave translations to English. Hopefully there are some Iranian people who could help you to get over this language barrier. I am sorry I can't be of too much help other than that (which is not very helpful at all, is it :( ).

My friends are always telling me "you are always speaking Chinese but your Chinese is already perfect" (which it is obviously not). I usually will just say "oh. Sorry, I will speak more English. " I notice that the English speaker is making mistakes and the English speaker is not correcting them. I am guilty of doing that sometimes just to keep the conversation going. I have been getting better about that though. Amazing lesson! Thanks!

Renshi means to know somebody and can also mean to recognize something, but that is a little bit more advanced, so don't worry about that now. Zhidao pretty much covers everything else there is to 'know'; including knowlege of facts. This brings me to your question. In the sentence, 你知道他是谁吗？, 他是谁 is a fact. It doesn't sound like a fact, but ta is the subject and shei is the direct object; together they form a fact (take my word for it, please because I am having a lot of trouble trying to express this :P If somebody can help me, that would be great). Now that we know that 他是谁 is a fact, we now know that 你知道他是谁吗？ is asking do you know the fact, 他是谁? So... Yes. We use zhi dao because you are asking if some one knows the fact, ta shi shei. HOWEVER, if the shi shei wasn't there, you could change zhi dao to ren shi; making it, ni ren shi ta ma? In this case, ta is a somebody and, using that rule above, we always use ren shi to ask about somebodies. I hope this helps. If not, I am sorry. This is sort of difficult for me to explain. I have no doubt that, should you feel the need, you could go directly to one of the C-Pod instructors and they could explain it MUCH better (and probably with more ease). Again, I hope this helps.

Look back and check everything I have posted and you will find that I have never said anything even remotely close to that. Perhaps somebody else made the comment and you had mistaken them for me, auntie68?

September 05, 2008, 01:36 AMI really do like these video lessons but I do have just one small problem with them: sometimes it is very hard to tell what it is that the word bubble is pointing to. I find that the target of the arrow can be unclear at times. Other than that, I really like this new twist to the ChinesePod learning experience! Thanks, CPod!
