Thanks for the lesson, was interested to hear the discussion at the end, as that seems to be a pretty similar theme from most Chinese I have talked to.

I've recently got engaged, but it has been a long road, and a lot of reassurance needed for my fiance's parents, as I regularly get told that 'all westerners (we're all the same btw!) get divorced, but Chinese never get divorced' etc.

I haven't spent too much time actually in China, but does anyone have comments on what it's actually like there? I 听说 that a lot of families just live apart, in different cities etc rather than formally getting divorced?  Isn't that effectivly the same thing, just with less 'losing face'?

Oh I would like to sign up for the progress beta please :)

Also nice to hear that other people find it a big step up from Elementary to Intermediate, makes me think it is possible! :)

That first sentence: 约会吗?

I realise this is just me as I often get confused with 'yao要' and it's 100 meanings, but that sentence sounds like (well initially translated in my head) as 'Do you want to go on a date?'

I suppose if you used 想 instead that would be more of an invitation?

Just trying to avoid any more awkward moments.. but I suppose that is half the fun of learning a language :)

Hey Pete,

Thanks for that, though if I can ask another question with hopefully not getting too side tracked.

One case I can't make too much sense of with 上 is this e.g.
中国是世界人口最多的国家.

Please explain what business Mr Shang has in that sentence! Why not 有 in that case?

thanks

I'm intrigued about the phrase '上床'. It doesn't make sense to me, isn't 上 normally to rise, or get up?  Why in this case does it mean the opposite?

I'm still only ele level, but I find 上 always pops up in weird places with yet another new meaning! :P
