February 14, 2011, 08:36 AMI think 测试 is also used in a school setting and refers to smaller more regular tests (like a weekly quiz), while 考试 is used for bigger exams (ex. 期末考试 - end of semester exam). But you are probably also right that 测试 has a broader scope of uses beyond academic performance.
