Posted on: The Non-Chinese Speaking Tourist and Toilets
January 14, 2008, 03:18 AMAfter spending a month in China in November I can now say I have seen all kinds...and all they say is true...if you are used to cleanliness in a bathroom...try and use the restrooms in 4 star hotels whenever possible. AVOID the restrooms in most train and bus stations. The public toilet I used in the Hutong in Beijing was actually cleaner (smell wasn't great) than some of the restaurants I went to. Once you get outside the big cities beware!!! and definately carry toilet paper and alcohol wipes everywhere you go. I'm sure it is better now than it used to be. Another tip: Carry Vicks Vapor rub. It's what paramedics use in situations when the smell is too fowl to bare. I absolutely loved my trip to China and will return but I have a super sensative nose and wheeeeeewww there are some smells! Lastly...don't look down any dark holes!
