June 27, 2010, 02:48 PMI have just rejoined Chinesepod.com after a few months work related break. I find the lessons and people to be as interesting as ever. Over a year ago, I visited the "new" offices in Shanghai and still recall Jenny's gracious and generous hospitality. This is a very fine community and one I am very happy to be a part of again....JohnS

I purchased a book whose title was 250 most common Chinese Characters. My friends started laughing calling me 250. They said that 500 is a complete brain so 250 is a "half wit". This happened last week so the lesson is well timed.

May 28, 2008, 11:32 AMAs a frequent visitor to China, KTV's are almost a nightly affair after the business day. This lesson with Jenny's explanation I thought was very good. Having a few songs that you feel comfortable singing is not a bad way to be prepared for these events. Also, it might be good to learn the simple dice game in advance. I avoid drinking and gambling and try to focus on the music and enjoying my friends. Good lesson.

May 28, 2008, 01:43 AMAre you punishing me for all of the free lessons I have been storing away? KTV's are a favorite subject. I know "The Moon Represents My Heart" in Chinese, have memories of Frank Sanatra's "My Way" which I hear Chinese business men sing every time I go and Wilbur Pan's "Bu De Bu Ai" which I remember because it is such a good song. Now, we have the Beijing Olympic Song with all of the KTV artists making cameos.
I promise now to rent a KTV room and invite all of the members of Chinesepod to come. Ken, you will have to sing in Chinese. Jenny, we get to pick the song and John, just what ever you want, Dude!
Oh, and Amber can pick the club, of course. You guys have such a great crew. Thank you for hours of pleasure and making us all feel that we are part of this grand venture!

May 23, 2008, 11:04 PMFor gifts, I look at what is in the duty free shop. They seem to have a handle on the most popular presents: liquor, cosmetics, ice wine, chocolates. I have never been disappointed. The dried fruit is something I didn't know. Nice.

Posted on: Smelly Cheese
July 28, 2010, 02:42 AMThere are many delicious cheeses without getting into canned, powdered and smelly ones. I think there should be a positive view of learning about cheeses in China but remember always that you should only use it as a condiment. It is not healthy to eat too much.
Some of the best tasting are as follows:
Brie
Creamy to hard depending on the age. Be careful. Softer is milder. It is strong tasting and used often with fruit preserves on buttery french bread.
Gouda Cheese Common, flavorful. Made in Holland. Cut in thin slices and melt it over bread. Good starter cheese.
Swiss Cheese
Thin slices are best. It can be very good melted over ham.
Havarti Cheese
I think this is the best tasting.
Have with pear or sweet wine. It is not too strong.
Cheddar Cheese
Most popular in America. Good on beef. Most common.
Eat with Italian food only. Maybe too strong.
Feta Cheese
Popular in America. Used with bread or on salads in small quantities as a flavoring.Gruyere Cheese Try it with something sweet. Just a little goes a long way.
