October 13, 2008, 12:21 AMwhat a fantastic lesson. i don't know how i missed it when it came out but i'm glad i found it now.
it's been a while since i've spent time in china or taiwan so my engnese is a little rusty, but one that i used to like to was "zenme nemma" (sorry - i don't have software to type in chinese). for example, if someone were to ask what i thought of the dear amber series, i would respond along the lines of, "zenme nemma kick-ass".

September 23, 2008, 01:50 AMthis topic evokes some pretty funny (in retrospect) memories. a while back i had a chinese american girlfriend in new york. her parents were pretty traditional and, as i was neither chinese nor a doctor, they were none too fond of me. during the 4 years we were together i was routinely subjected to dinners with her family which featured me sitting awkwardly and sweating a lot while her father sat across from me and explained to the table/restaurant (loudly and in cantonese, which i don't understand) all the reasons why my facial features made me an unsuitable mate for his daughter. from what i gathered later through my girlfriend and her siblings, the lectures usually centered around my eyebrows, earlobes and mouth, which apparently suggest that i am exceedingly stupid and am destined to live a very short poverty-stricken life.
i should've gotten a second opinion.

October 30, 2008, 05:18 AManother topic that is near and dear to me. i was once taken to the cleaners with this scam. somehow i ended up with some fake 100's in guangzhou a few years back. these apparently were not even good fakes, though i couldn't tell the difference. i tried to spend them everywhere i went across southwest china and usually people would start laughing at me before i even finished handing the money to them.
i asked every one of them how they could tell it was fake and they would look at me like i was a jackass and explain it as though it were totally obvious. and they all gave the same explanation. they would rub it and bend it and point to various locations on the bill, none of which indicated to me any difference from the authentic currency. then they would always end by doing this weird thing where they held the bill by both ends, snapped it back and forth rapidly and then held it up to the light. again i was able to discern no difference from the real money. but i guess it must've been fake because i couldn't get anyone to take it off my hands. eventually i tried taking it to the bank of china with the argument that they were the ones who gave it to me when i changed money. there response was something along the lines of "sucks to be you."
by the way, jenny - outstanding use of one of my favorite things: "bu" in front of an english adjective. i counted a buconsistent, a bulogical and a bupatient all in one podcast. strong work.
