January 09, 2008, 09:47 PMI definitely agree that the series are useful for repetition. I would just suggest writing out a general outline of a story first. And I suppose I am biased about the gossip magazine stuff. Can't stand it in any language.

January 08, 2008, 09:47 PMI thought the whole idea of jizhou and kongluozu was a good concept but it became clear that there really was no direction to the story. I guess in that sense this ending is fitting. It seems like the writers at Cpod come up with an idea, write a few episodes, then get bored with it and scramble to find a way to end it. But hey the purpose of Cpod is mandarin education not quality entertainment. Now if only they'd end the annoying Baguazazhi series.....

January 03, 2008, 06:37 PMI thought it was all over China, but in Guilin (and many other places i've been) "qing cai" can mean lettuce or any other green vegetable. It includes xiao bai cai, da bai cai, kongxin cai, cai hua, even broccoli. If you walk into a restaurant and ask them "you shenme qingcai?" They'll usually go through a list similar to this. Bok choi is Bai cai in mandarin.

I just want to say that I studied Chinese for a year in a university class in the US and when i went to China for the first time I was understood. Granted it was all very basic stuff, but I was understood by ACTUAL Chinese people.

June 26, 2007, 07:35 AMI think the Fix is a great addition to the Chinesepod lessons. A few things i noticed: - Are the practice sentences correctly matched with their difficulty level? (i.e. Do most intermediate learners know how to say "autopsy?") - Shouldn't the to-be-translated English sentences be more accurately translated? Of course there are many ways to translate certain ideas, but I thought one sentence in this lesson's Fix was kind of strange: “On May Day I want to go on a shopping spree in Hong Kong" The Chinese is given as: "五一我打算去香港血拼，你呢？” Wouldn't the english sentence, "On May Day I plan to go on a shopping spree in Hong Kong, what about you?" be a more accurate translation? I think that if the point of the Fix is to encourage learners to translate English sentences and then see how their translations measure up, there should be more logical translations.
