Where can I find the transcript someone made of this lesson?

There are several references to it in the comments but no link.

Thanks.

As a customer trying to learn Chinese here, I strongly disagree with Pete. Your job is NOT to produce a literary translation but one that helps learners learn the language. Finding an English equivalent in slang that has no literal relationship with the Chinese original is appropriate for translation of a movie or novel. It is not appropriate for Chinese learners, who need to know BOTH the literal translation and the general sense or meaning of a phrase.

It may amuse you all to know that in the 1980s, 同事 was translated into English as "comrade" - not "co-worker" or "colleague."  I kid you not!

We have a Q visa, which is another type, for family members of Chinese citizens.  It's my in-laws who are Chinese...

你要托人找工作...

How do you know this means "If you want someone to help you find work" and not "If you want to help someone find work"?

What is the difference (if any) between 薪水 and 工资 ?

I've only run across the latter term and never the former.

I asked someone from Beijing and Harbin about the word 爽 and they said they'd never heard the word spoken in their whole life.  To them, it was kind of a literary word.

Could it be Shanghai slang?

I agree with the consensus that voice A in the dialogue sounds robotically unpleasant.  In addition, all the supposed enhancements in the video version were so distracting and visually horrible that I retreated to the audio version.

Please give us genuine native Chinese speakers (humans) in the dialogue as most of us will not be interacting with robots when we use our conversational Chinese!

Thank you.

So a better translation would be "The last time I went I felt lonely"?

That is amazing, that someone could feel lonely for the two or three minutes it would take to go the buffet and fill their plate and then come back to the table to eat with others!  If this is what you meant, it's quite a cultural difference.

>>The last time I went lonely. <<

This is not good English and not a good translation of the Chinese, I suspect.

上次去吃自助餐,冷冷清清的 - Does this mean, I went by myself, OR that I was the only person there?

And in either case, I don't understand how taking food at a buffet could resemble begging.

For me, taking food at a buffet feels like unlimited abundance.

Please explain! Thank you.
