October 20, 2015, 08:43 AMThe definition "serious" is used for both 认真 and 欢严 in the sentence below and in another (about not joking with a 欢严 personality). However, after trying to differentiate how they are also different, both sentences make more sense if 认真 is translated as "serious, sincere/dedicated" and 欢严 is translated as "stern or strict."

April 30, 2014, 01:03 AM可惜了! Agree with mikeinewshot - there are growing quality control problems. In general, the quality of the translations into English has gotten increasingly shoddy. There are even wrongful translations from Chinese into English nowadays. A while back, I've stopped reporting them as usually, my emails are ignored, defensively \"explained,\" and even when admittedly wrong, not updated and corrected.
Well, perhaps ChinesePod unfortunately reached the tipping point of most for-profit enterprises - at first, quality, quality, and quality until reaching a profitable critical mass of customers. And then it just takes it easy and harvest the profits...perhaps eventually to sell it to another company...
But the good news is that my years with ChinesePod has helped raise my level where I can in fact discern the lazy translations...and use other tools to figure out the accurate translation.

June 20, 2013, 09:05 AMI learned a lot of useful expressions, but I think Jenny should get around a bit more. She is unfortunately adding to a stereotype of uncaring Chinese civil servants. I am sure they exist, but that's my experience in 4-1/2 years in China.
You could change the context of this dialogue to the US Embassy - the horror stories of the inefficiences and unnecessary long lines when it comes to normal Chinese citizen requests to visit or study in America. It makes me wonder if there is any awareness of how we squander our soft-power over open-minded, global-orientated visa seekers.
Finally, I just moved to Dali, Yunnan and spent the previous 4-1/2 years living in Beijing and Shanghai. Generally, I've been efficiently taken care of to all bureaucracies and even the common medical system - western and traditional medicine. I do complain about having to re-register my residency after each trip outside of China even though I haven't moved, but I can't complain about the service.

December 25, 2011, 01:26 AMHey Jenny - why do all your western Holiday lessons come out either a day before or on the actual holiday? As a suggestion, wouldn't it be more useful if it came out a week or 5 days earlier so we can use the words with our Chinese colleagues or if not in China, Chinese speaking friends?

WOW, then you'll really trump your predecessor owner and I've been using ChinesePod for over 6 years. The Shanghai group never branded literary.
