Ever since I got my degree in education I have been a traveling teacher(English, Physics, Biology), often working in developing countries and doing my best to raise educational standards (even though the impact is ephemeral at best). So far, I spent about a year respectively in 13 countries (I'm 36, currently doing a stint in Vietnam). In 2009, I will add China to that list. I have had some pretty exotic experiences for sure (ranging from wearing a burka all day to assisting a birth in the slums...).

June 22, 2008, 10:12 PMSpeaking of "unpleasant experience"...how safe is it to travel by train in China as a single woman? I'm a bit worried I might get harassed or pickpocketed, especially after watching one of these Chinese TV programs that's supposed to educate the public about the dangers of not keeping one's wits about one. I mean, I've survived crammed Indian trains (goats and a cow included), kids peeing in the aisle in Bolivia and riding on the top (yeah, exactly, the roof) of a train in Cambodia spending the whole journey trying to help a farmer struggling to get his load of huge grapefruits safely to the capital - so I don't think the Chinese transport system can be bad.
Yet, I'd be interested in whether it is advisable to actually sleep in one of those 硬卧.

You could think of it in terms of a participle compound. In English, you wouldn't say "This person is good" even if it's clear from the context you're referring to their figure. The proper expression would be "good-looking". It's the same with 好看， 好吃， 好喝 等等

When my granny made fish, she would always insist on eating the head and giving everyone the rest of the fish, claiming that she liked the head so much. Later, it turned out she was simply making a kind of sacrifice to ensure we all had a proper meal so she settled for the head. It must have been sufficiently nutritional, though, because she lived till her late nineties.

"Germans make chicken feet soup." Really? Is this a regional speciality? I never came across this dish during my time in Germany. I've tasted "Flecke", though. Cooked innards...anyone complaining about pet animals being part of Chinese cuisine? ;-)

I cannot give you any specific info about these areas. What I can tell you is that I have never had problems with the x-ray affecting the quality of the film. It's probably safer than relying on local labs. How about putting the films into you handbag or even jacket? Those are hardly ever checked with the x-ray scanner, rather manually or with a lower dose. Simply tell the staff about your concerns.
The more popular quality brands are available in the bigger stores.
