I'm assuming since Amber suggested caulking windows during the winter, that there typically aren't any restrictions from landlords regarding any "modifications" to their property?

Regarding the height issue in dating, I can personally attest that the majority of the Asian men I've encountered (both foreign born and those raised in the U.S.) did not want to date me because I was too tall.  Granted, 5'9 is a bit out of the norm for Asian height, but you would assume if a girl took the effort to ask them out, they would at least be a little bit more open-minded about the matter.

I wonder if the concept of being "old" in your late 20's is universal across Asian culture in general.  In Japanese media, there's a running joke that if you're 21, you're past your prime and un-marriable. :)

Enjoyed the videos, thanks for posting them.

Cheers!

Thanks matt_c !

In retrospect, I should have fleshed out my question more, but you elaborated and answered what I was curious about -- which was the degree of "training" needed to be a chef.

Your explanation was most appreciated! :)

谢谢.

What a great podcast to start my Monday morning. I'm TOTALLY hungry now! :)

Pete, are most receipes learned via culinary schools? Or are they passed on through the generations via family members, neighbors, friends, etc?

Thanks!

elliepanda:

Here's an alternative way to write Chinese:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5420

You obviously need to have Firefox installed first. I do not have Administrative rights on my work computer, so I can't install the programs mentioned above or change the language settings on my machine.

"Fireinput" seems to work quite well for my needs.

Cheers.

Is picking an appropriate 'day' to move still widely practiced in China?

Growing up, I remember my grandmother always looking at a Chinese calendar and telling the family what we could or couldn't do that day/week. (e.g. Move furniture, move into a new home, haircuts, doctor's visits, etc.)

My mother still follows the calendar to some extent. Needless to say, she's caused MANY headaches when I've made appointments or taken time off from work to take part in some activity that were contrary to what the calendar said was "appropriate".

Who on earth charted out this calendar anyways? :)

Do they have anything similar to the defensive driving courses offered in the US in China?

The geek in me just wanted to add her 2 cents  :)

DVD 9 basically means that it's a dual layer DVD capable of holding more information (~8.5 Gigs) as opposed to DVD 5, which holds about ~4.7 Gigs.  In theory, DVD 9 movies are "better quality" because less compression is needed to make the movie fit on the disk.

However, as someone who has inadvertently purchased movies on EBAY thinking they were the actual releases, I can attest that whoever manufacturers these need a serious crash course on proper video compression.  I would sometimes see gigs of space leftover when I checked out the disk properties on my computer.  Anyhow, I guess they must be taking lessons from the same people who are responsible for translating the English subtitles. ;)

I grew up watching a lot of Hong Kong movies and even then, one of my biggest pet peeves was how the english subtitles (aside from being colored white) was NEVER accurate.
