Hi folks,

Amber remains a close friend of mine, and I feel obliged to respond to some of the theories being posted here.  But I also want to respect her privacy.

So I will say this: that Amber had always dreamt of going to the Big Apple, that she had every intention of coming back to Shanghai after her sabbatical (no, she hadn't vacated her apartment, not that it's any of our business), and that when she did receive a job offer in New York, she was surprised and thankful as anyone unemployed in the big city would be.

It may seem like a too-convenient coincidence to many of us, but think about it... what podcasting company WOULDN'T snap up a successful, award-winning podcaster like Amber who was looking for a job in their city?

I can't say I've listened much to her new product; obviously they have a long way to go to gain the credibility and listenership that cPod enjoys.  But I want to tell you this as Amber's friend:  Amber's got to do what's best for Amber.  We may be her listeners and her friends, but in the end we are not responsible for her happiness and her carreer; she is.

Anyone who knows Amber knows that she is not a liar.  She didn't mislead anyone about her intentions.

As for Marco, yes, he is going to Hong Kong to film school to pursue his love of directing.  The kid is going to be a big success.

Dear Amber,

I am exceedingly proud of you for the excellent body of work you've created here at ChinesePod.  I'm glad you could follow your dream to go to New York, and most of all I'm glad I could be part of your life, for the fun times and even the not-so-fun times.

Knock 'em dead, sweetheart!

And when you get that dream job, and if they need someone else... well, you have a copy of my resume! ha ha ;)

jim_parker,

When compare things with 没有,you're saying that A is not as [adj] as B.  So:

Connie 没有我搞Connie is not as tall as me.

You can also go ahead and think of that as "Connie is less tall than me."

Anyway, if you remove the negative element 没, you get:

Connie 有我(那么)高。 Connie is just as tall as me.

If you want to say that Connie is taller, you should use 比:

Connie 比我高的多。  Connie is much taller than me.

In summary,here's the paradigm:

  • 比 = comparatiely more than
  • 有 = relatively the same as
  • 没有= comparatively less than (A is not as [adj] as B)

(apologies to those who want me to say "not as tall as I," and "less tall than I," I just can't.)

Jenny,

I think the term "ABC" represents the Chinese and the immigrant parent way of thinking about US nationals of Chinese ancestry.  It's a measure of Chineseness.

However, in Seattle at least, among my generation, we choose the term "Chinese American."  I wouldn't dream of calling my Chinese American friends and cousins "ABCs."  And never once have I ever heard anyone call former governer Gary Locke an "ABC."

Some might find this a PC quibble, but remember, in USA we have an ugly history of putting American citizens of Asian descent into internment camps.

So for us, consequently, if you hold a US passport, you get the label "American," just like all the other ethnicities.

Here's a couple of photos by Frank Fradella, doctored by FuDawei and Bazza.

I'm not really Borg, they're just doctored photos... but Amber is.

Me, I am a Cylon.  Actually I prefer the term Cylon American.

Hi wildyaks,

The FrenchPod UpperIntermediate and Advanced lessons are all in French.  I like 'em.

ItalianPod is great, too!

excuter,

I'm not sure I see a parallel here.  Amber never threatened to break Clay's head.  If I manage to get out of the recording studio uninjured, I consider it a small victory.

Thanks, bpeacock.  I have to stay, I was pretty nervous.  Connie threatened to kick me in the neck if I screwed up the podcast.
