I think one of the hardest things I find when we live in China is respecting people's different perspectives and beliefs even when they seem really superstitious. I especially found this with the 月子 yuezi after giving birth, there are so many things you can't do already as a new mum, and then a whole lot more that will bring bad luck... it's hard work!

February 01, 2010, 11:58 PMI think the balcony sentence makes sense, in that you connect the two rooms. 阳台yangtai in my understanding of the word are already enclosed with windows right? I think a better translation woudl be 'how about we extend this room through to the sunroom/balcony'

February 01, 2010, 11:51 PMI'm from NZ and it's pretty common to have shoes off houses. Most people ask before walking in the door. Possibly our rural gumboot heritage... can't wear you're workboots inside that's for sure!
I actually found MORE people wear shoes inside in rural China (as compared to rural NZ), you just take your shoes off to sit on the kang or rug.

I listened to it twice on the way into my office, and now I think I need to spend some time working through the transcript, vocab and video! Or maybe it was just that her nice relaxing voice was sending me off to sleep/deep meditation on the bus???
