That's the whole issue! What is "Chinese"?

I'm born to mixed parents overseas, I always take exception when people call me Chinese.

I don't mind so much when people make the observation that I look Chinese, or that I have a considerable advantage when learning Chinese, but when people imply that I should be welcoming them to the Olympics, or should hold certain political views, or that I should understand the PRC better because of my genetics, I get a bit annoyed.

Whenever someone pulls the "we're all Chinese" card on me it ticks me off a bit.

Here's an interesting dialogue. The situation: I walk into a restaurant toilet. There is only one cubicle, and a Guy 1 is waiting.

Guy 1:朋友,你快好了没有?(Friend, can you hurry up?)
Guy 2: 对不起,我拉肚子了,等一下!(I’m sorry, I have diarrhea, just a moment!)

They certainly don't mind mentioning 拉肚子 here!

I have quite a few pairs of twins that I teach; this is the natural way to beat the one child policy~!

I have a Chinese speaking friend on MSN who always greets me with 你来了 when my little avatar pops up. I always respond with 还没有 as a joke.

The first time I did it I convinced him that I hadn't actually 来了 and that he was having a conversation with a computer program that I had written that was designed to simulate the reactions that a real person might make. He always maintains that he was just playing along though.

What do Australians get for Chinesepod's Australian month? Is there a plan for Australian year any time soon? How about AustralianPod.com?

I'm from Australia, one of the farthest flung outposts of the english ln the world, so I admit that I am a little biased when I say that there is no "correct" accent in any language. I think that it's a myth perpetuated by midwest americans, beijingers, tokyoites, and parisians; that their accent is "correct" and that others should speak like them. It was mentioned that Jenny's accent isn't "correct"... I was mildly offended by that... To say that Jenny's accent marks her as Shanghainese, I'd say "of course", but to say that there's something wrong with that, I'd say "of course not". Do others feel the same?
