How would I say: "My paternal grandparents are still alive, but they live far away, so I visit them only once in a while. Moreover, there also a younger paternal cousin, but we're not very close. He just finished primary school."

@foleadu When a little kid wearing a pair of "military look" trousers threw a bunch of firecrackers (the really loud ones) right before my feet just as I stepped out of the house, I knew it was Army Day.
@wolson Or discussing strategies on a podcast? That would be really useful, at least for those amongst us who play Counterstrike ;-) And I'm sure the NCO didn't say 冲!
Just general interest: How would you say "Hold your fire?"

Strangely enough, I found the dialogue pretty funny, especially because of Jenny's rendition of "我怕" which didn't sound frightened at all, rather...er...
Regarding Army Day, what's the point of getting half a day off (for active personnel)?

July 30, 2008, 07:01 PMRegarding 读 vs. 学习, can the former be used with a subject or is it only used for "attend school" and the like? Does 学习 limited to the actual learning process or can it mean "study" in a broader sense ("She went to the library in order to study" etc.) as well?

I'm returning home for a few weeks soon, so I've already stocked up on souvenirs (no fake watches though) - Those little brightly coloured animal figurines made of metal are brilliant. One thing has given me nightmares though - I have a collection of 20-30 DVDs. How could I possibly get them through customs? Since the legality is ... erm... debatable, I'm 急死了。 Any suggestions?

August 03, 2008, 05:19 PMA question concerning when 一个 has to be used, and in which cases 个 is sufficient. 一 appears in "他一直都是一个很乐观的小伙子", for instance, but a lot of expansion sentences with a (seemingly) similar structure don't contain 一. Is there any rule of thumb to determine whether it's necessary? Any help is appreciated.
