Since I feel the same obligation that Chris feels (to speak English with those whose English is superior to my Chinese), I have had to get around this by finding a few friends who speak either no English or whose English is behind my Chinese. One friend is the laoban at a coffee shop -she has literally nothing to do all day but make drinks and talk with the chubby foreign kid.
