年头, as a dialect in north China, is now used widely in chinese.
We usually say '这年头' , which probably means 'these years'.
这年头工作不好找. ->It is hard to find a job these years.
In this phrase, 头 is read in "light sound" (I don't know how to translate 轻声, a important tone in spoken Chinese).
I am a chinese student, and I have not heard the saying "月头".
If we say "the beginning of the year", we'll say 年初.
