Recently, a news story dimmed everyone's spirits. During the Spring Festival, a time for the family to be together, Guangzhou City's first ever “abandoned baby safety island” received 79 abandoned babies in 15 days. Whether or not setting up abandoned baby islands can change the practice of abandoning babies, what painful aspects of society are hiding behind abandoned baby islands, and how we can effectively reduce the practice of abandoning babies... Concerning these questions, today we have invited an expert on child welfare, Ms. Li to be a guest in the studio. We welcome you!
Ms. Li, first, we want to understand what is the situation that most of these abandoned babies are in? Why are they being abandoned by their loved ones? Do you have any related data on this?
According to rough statistics from the China Centre for Children's Welfare and Adoption, of the babies received in every single place where “abandoned baby safety islands” have been established, approximately 99% of them are disabled children. The biggest reason that babies are abandoned is that families have no way to cope with the high costs of medical treatment and no way to cope with the future costs of special education for their special child. Many families are afraid that they will be made poor because of the illness. This has definitely revealed the imperfect aspects of China's present children's welfare system.
